What is EXIF data?

EXIF stands for Exchangeable Image File Format. It is a block of metadata your camera or phone writes into the JPEG at the moment of capture. Alongside technical values such as shutter speed, aperture and ISO, that block can hold a GPS section with the latitude, longitude and sometimes the altitude at which the photo was taken.

That GPS section is exactly what this tool reads. If it is present you get coordinates to six decimal places, precise enough to point at the spot on a map. If it is not, you see the remaining EXIF fields plus an explanation of why the location is probably missing.

Why the location is so often missing

In practice, most photos people want to investigate no longer carry location data. That is almost always down to the route the file took. Messaging apps and social platforms compress an image on send and throw the metadata away in the process. It is a deliberate privacy measure: without it, every shared holiday photo could give away the sender's home address.

There are other causes. A screenshot never carries the original's EXIF. A photo re-saved by an editor usually loses its metadata too. And a device that cannot get a satellite fix indoors simply writes no GPS section at all.

What if there is no GPS in the file?

Then the location is not lost, only no longer readable. The photo itself still holds clues: the shape of the facades, the type of paving, the colour of the cycle path, the signage, the street furniture and the planting. A trained OSINT researcher can often find a Dutch street from those alone.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The photo is read by JavaScript in your own browser tab and never leaves your device. You can check that yourself: open the network tab in your developer tools and you will see no requests at all while a file is being read.

Why is there no GPS location in my photo?

The most common reason is that the file was shared through an app. WhatsApp, Signal, Instagram, Facebook and X strip EXIF data on send, precisely to protect the sender. Beyond that, location services may have been off in the camera app, the photo may have been edited and re-saved, or the device could not get a GPS fix indoors.

Which file formats are supported?

JPEG, because in practice that is the only format that carries EXIF metadata. PNG and WebP have no standard EXIF block. HEIC, the default on recent iPhones, can hold location data but needs a separate decoder this tool does not use. Export a HEIC file as JPEG to read it here.

How accurate is the GPS location in a photo?

A phone outdoors with a clear view of the sky usually gets within 5 to 10 metres. In a city centre with tall buildings that can stretch to several tens of metres because signals bounce. Indoors the device often falls back on wifi or cell positioning, which can be hundreds of metres off.

Can I still find the location without EXIF data?

Yes, but not from the file. You have to look at the content of the photo instead: facades, street furniture, signage, planting and the road profile. GeoPin does exactly that automatically, by comparing the image against an index of Dutch street-level imagery.
