GeoPin vs Google Lens

Both look at a photo and search an enormous collection of images. They just answer different questions: Lens asks what is this, GeoPin asks where is this.

Two different questions

Google Lens is a general visual search engine. Point it at a plant, a product, a piece of text or a building and it looks for visually similar images across the web, plus everything Google knows about those images. For recognising a famous place that works beautifully: the Dom tower in Utrecht or the Erasmus bridge are identified instantly, because thousands of labelled photos of them exist.

GeoPin does something narrower. We compare a photo not against the web but against an index of street-level imagery in the Netherlands, and the answer we return is not a name but a coordinate. That makes the tool useless for identifying a species of plant and exactly right for an anonymous residential street no tourist has ever photographed.

When to pick which

Use Google Lens when you want to know what you are looking at, when the photo shows a recognisable monument or tourist site, or when you want a quick free first impression. For those cases there is little reason to reach for anything else.

Use GeoPin when you need a coordinate rather than a name, when the photo shows an ordinary Dutch street, when the result has to stand up in a case file, or when the determination has to happen automatically through an API.

Frequently asked questions

Can Google Lens tell where a photo was taken?

Sometimes. If the photo shows a well-known building or a heavily photographed spot, Lens will often name it, and with that indirectly give you the location. For an ordinary residential street with no landmarks it usually returns only visually similar images with no location.

Why does Lens not give coordinates?

Because it is not a geolocation service. Lens is built to recognise objects, text and products and steer you to relevant web pages. Locating something is a by-product that happens when the recognised object is itself a place.

Is GeoPin more accurate than Google Lens?

For the question of where in the Netherlands a street photo was taken, yes, because that is the only thing it is built for. For recognising objects, plants, products or text, Lens is incomparably broader and better.

Can I combine the two?

Yes, and that is often the smartest approach. Start with a reverse search in Lens to see whether the image is already known. If that draws a blank, image matching against a street imagery index is the next step.
